Search and rescue operations underway after a multi-storey building collapse in Nairobi
NAIROBI (Kenya), 16/03/2026.- Locals look on as rescue operations by a team of Kenyan Multi Agency Disaster respond units including Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service and Kenya Red cross rescue team (not seen) during a search and rescue of locals said to have been trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building under demolition, as they scavenged for scrap metal from buildings demolished by multi-state agencies in Blue Estate in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi, Kenya, 16 March 2026. Four bodies were recovered and several rescued and rushed to nearby health facilities, as efforts to reach others suspected to be trapped continue. In a statement, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration said, the structure was among several buildings located along the riparian corridor of the Nairobi River that have been earmarked for removal under the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme being implemented by the Nairobi Rivers Commission and it came down following an attempted demolition earlier in the day.
